Marquette Library Tour was a Success!

On Friday, September 26th, ALSO and other SLIS students took a fieldtrip to Milwaukee to tour Marquette University's Raynor Memorial Library.

Thirteen students attended, travelling to Milwaukee in a 4-vehicle carpool.  We were greeted by Jean Zanoni, the Associate Dean of the library.

We were presented with an overview of various departments in the library, including technical services, reference and instruction, digital content, and archives.

We concluded with a tour of the archives (including the highly admired Tolkien manuscript collection), and the rest of the library.

It was fascinating to see how a private university library operates in comparison with the public research institution we are accustomed to at UW-Madison.  It was also interesting to learn about the experiences of librarians working in an urban campus library.

Overall, the tour was a huge success for both ALSO and Marquette. Jean thought went so well, she suggested making it an annual event. SLIS students that attended the event were so impressed by how it went, that they eagerly confirmed that they would be interested in attending another similar event in the future. ALSO has already been in contact with library administrators at UW-Milwaukee to organize another trip to Milwaukee to tour the resources of our counterparts at UWM SOIS.

Do you have suggestions for future tours or fieldtrips for ALSO?  Comment on this blog post or email us at also.uw@gmail.com.
