Hello! At that pancake breakfast, Jessica and I talked over an idea I have for a possible fundraiser. Its something that was brought up in the first meeting we had last semester.
A gaming night! Right now, Jessica's contacting College Library about using space in the Open Book Cafe for it. But, before we can get that we need to come up with the plan, right?
So, here's what I have so far.
Board Games and Wii: Requires usage of someone's Wii, and collection of board games. Getting multiple copies of the same game, allows for possibilities for a tournament of sorts, where a single person or a team can win a prize(s). Scrabble is a possibility. Settles of Catan is one that I think would go over well. A game of Life? Might be amusing. These are the things that I need help with! What does the ALSO community have access to?
Sponsor(s): Is it possible to contact a restaurant, or the Memorial Union, to sponsor the event? Have them give prizes, maybe a discount on food available to the event attendees? (Idea of snacks is a good one, over a full meal (pizza)). This is a way to provide a prize(s) for little to no cost, and helps ALSO establish itself in the community. I just don't know the rules for organizations doing such a thing.
Promotion: Posters up for library students...but also, contact the different libraries, and ask to put up the event for student workers, and for librarians! Make this an inclusive event, that people from all aspects of the academic library world can participate in. This provides an opportunity for people to network and have a good time, which is a positive experience to have people associate with ALSO.
Fundraising: Charge $1 to join for a raffle, with additional tickets also costing $1. We'd want a decent prize for this. Possibly, have two prizes, one for library affiliated people, and one for their families. Library affiliated get the prize of having WAAL ticket (maybe? is it more expensive for non-students/full time librarians to go?), non-library get a game maybe?
Date: I'm looking at the Monday after spring break as a possibility. So that means, in only a few weeks.. Ahhh!
Time: Event itself would be 4-5 hours, depending on turn out.
Games I have: Settlers of Catan (3-4 players), Zombies (2-6 players), Humans (2-6 players, combinable with zombies/humans for a 2-12 player game), Apples to Apples (3-8 players), Road to the White House (3-6 players), Munchkin (3-6 players), Betrayal at House on the Hill (3-6 players), Infernal Contraption (2-4 players), Wings of War (2 - lots), The Great Space Race (3-6).
Wii Resources: The OBC has wii games available for checkout for larger variety. I don't own a wii myself however.
ReplyDeleteOk, so I just researched information on becoming an official UW student organization and there is a fairly detailed registration process. We need a constitution and by-laws and contact info for four student members. I think we should discuss this at the Monday meeting after we talk to Sarah McDaniel. That way we can complete the registration process and have access to Union event space, sponsorship, and funding. It may take longer than the week after Spring Break though. So either we should move the date back for the game night, or choose another venue for that event but keep this in the works for the future.
ReplyDeleteIs Settlers of Catan being brought to this event? If so, awesome! My fiance loves the game.
